Introduction
The Department of Ophthalmology is a key discipline of the hospital and serves as the Shenzhen Base of the Guangdong Provincial Low Vision Rehabilitation Technology Guidance Center, the Shenzhen Training Base for the Ministry of Health’s “Vision First, China Action” program, and the Guangdong Provincial Clinical Standardized Training Base for Ophthalmology. It is also a clinical internship base for ophthalmology at Shenzhen University and a public training base for vocational education in Shenzhen. The department is a co-construction unit of the Shenzhen Branch of the National Collaborative Group for Clinical Diagnosis and Research of Traumatic Optic Neuropathy and the leading unit of the Neuro-Ophthalmology Committee of the Shenzhen Optometry Association. It is home to the Shenzhen Diabetes-Related Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center and played a leading role in establishing the Neuro-Ophthalmology Committee of the Shenzhen Optometry Association. The department has received numerous honors, including Advanced Grassroots Party Organization, Advanced Collective, Harmonious Doctor-Patient Demonstration Post, and Women’s Civilization Post.

The Department of Ophthalmology at Shenzhen Second People’s Hospital was one of the first in Shenzhen to perform vitreoretinal surgeries and cataract phacoemulsification procedures. It was also the first public hospital in the city to offer excimer laser correction for refractive errors. The department remains at the forefront of ophthalmic technology in Shenzhen. Its key areas of development include cataracts, retinal diseases, ocular trauma, and optometry. Routine procedures include phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation, complex cataract surgeries, 23G/25G minimally invasive vitrectomy, and combined anterior and posterior segment surgeries, as well as advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques for complex retinal diseases, all of which maintain a leading position in Shenzhen.
